Cornish Connections

We are proud that all of our soloists for this concert have strong local connections and are testament to the enduring excellence of musical teaching in the county.  All of them either grew up in Cornwall or now work and teach here, nurturing the young talent of the future – or both.

Violinist Philip Montgomery-Smith, who is to perform J S Bach’s Violin Concerto in E, is a regular member and regular leader of Three Spires Orchestra as well as Truro Symphony Orchestra, St Mary's Orchestra and Truro Choral Society; many will remember his beautiful performance of Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending two years ago with Truro Symphony Orchestra. Philip also teaches for Cornwall Music Service Trust. A further point of interest is that his son Jake will be playing violin with Three Spires Orchestra for this concert.

Cornish-born soprano Cheryl Rosevear,

who 20 years ago won the BBC Choirgirl of the Year award, is well known to cathedral audiences for her many appearances with Truro Choral Society and St Mary’s Singers, most recently sharing the platform with Felicity Turner in the lovely duet in Poulenc’s Gloria in January with Truro Choral Society.

Felicity also grew up in Cornwall; following a period as a girl chorister at Exeter Cathedral, she attended Truro School, and also sang with St Mary’s Singers and Cornwall Youth Choir before going off to study at Royal Holloway and completing her studies with a distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

George Clark,

baritone, who now works as a freelance singer in London and has toured with The Sixteen, was a boy chorister at Truro Cathedral before becoming a bass choral scholar at York Minster, and attending York University.

Tenor Joseph Wicks took up the post of Assistant Organist and Director of Music at Truro Cathedral two years ago following a period as Assistant Organist at St John’s College Cambridge; he is also Musical Director of St Mary’s Singers and is a founding member of the vocal consort The Gesualdo Six.
